Hayley Lyle
I am a law student at the University of Cape Town in my final year. Prior to commencement of my legal studies I studied a BA Value and Policy studies majoring in Decision Making and Economics at Stellenbosch University. I grew up in KZN and attended high school there at St Mary's DSG Kloof. In my final year of economics I took a module in competition policy and was exposed to competition law. I developed a passion for this area of the law and it was a result of the exposure that I decided to study law at UCT. Next semester I will take an elective in Competition Law. I have absolutely loved my time here at the Tribunal. The exposure I have had has been incredible and I feel very lucky to have received the opportunity to take part in the internship program. I hope to make a career in Competition Law, and so I feel I have really benefited from my time here.

I am from Newcastle in Kwa Zulu Natal. I'm currently studying my Masters at Wits. My passion and love for Competition Law only emerged in my final year of my LLB. Like most people, I did not know what competition law was. As I immersed myself in the subject, I learned the crucial role competition policy and regulation plays in our economy. What attracts me most to completion law is its multiple intricacies and contemporary nature. It's forever developing and changing across many jurisdictions.
My time at the Competition Tribunal only furthered my love for this area of law. Memorable, are the laughs shared with other interns, panel members and staff, in and out of the office. The internship programme was a rewarding learning experience that one can only be ever so grateful to be given.
Thala Msutu |
Thala is a final year student at Stellenbosch University, doing his second year of his post-graduate LLB after completing his BCom (Law) degree in 2014. He grew up in King Williams Town with his family, which includes two sisters – one presently working in Johannesburg and the other in Grade 10. Asked why he applied to the Tribunal to be considered for the internship programme, Thala said: “I saw it as a great opportunity. My interest in Competition law developed after I left school and began realising its importance, and that I had a real interest in law and in economics.”

A former Durbanite, he studied at Clifton Boy’s School. His research is looking at Airline Alliances in SA, European and American Law.
